Night at the Zoo is a 2015 American fantasy comedy-drama film directed by Marc Webb and written by Kemp Powers and Steven Conrad. It is a spin-off of the Night at the Museum film series,

and the fourth film overall. The film stars Henry Cavill, Robert Downey Jr., Tina Fey, Jacob Tremblay, Sam Neill, Ed Asner, John Hurt, Andrew Garfield, Djimon Hounsou, Jeff Bridges and Andy Serkis. In the film, a Zookeeper (Cavill) and a Night Watchman (Downey Jr.) both discover that the animals at their zoo can secretly talk thanks to a magical item similar to the Tablet of Akhmenrah seen in the Museum films. Subsequently, the duo and the animals must try to save the Zoo from being shut down and destroyed by a greedy developer (Hurt).

20th Century Fox released the film on March 15, 2015 to generally positive reviews from critics and was a moderate success, but was beat by Universal's Furious 7 and Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron. But the film's moderate success led to the possibility of a sequel, but it may be in development hell.

Plot

In the fictional city of Woodland Coast in the Pacific Northwest of the U.S., the Wild Earth Zoo and Aquarium is a popular attraction dedicated to Wildlife Conservation and Education. Johnny Gibson is the head keeper of Wild Earth Zoo, caring deeply for the facility's animals.

Meanwhile, A man named Hector is hired as the zoo's night watchman. At the Gibson family home, Johnny and Lorna's son Tim dreams to be a zookeeper at Wild Earth when he grows up, but conflicts between his father and mother affect it. On his first night at Wild Earth, Hector finds some of animals are seemingly missing, but when he finds them, those animals are among most of the other animals in a conference meeting and they can talk, much to Hector's shock. Zulu the Lion is the leader of the animals, and warns Hector that the reason of the conference is that a greedy company will destroy Wild Earth, or as they call it by "the ranch."

Production

In 2011, producer Chris Columbus expressed interested in a Night at the Museum Spin-off which was set in a zoo rather than a museum.

On November 10, 2012, the film was announced and that it would have a completely new cast of new characters. Filming occurred from March to August of 2014. The fictional Wild Earth Zoo, the film's main setting, was based on the production team's research, inspiration and filming trips to the Calgary Zoo, Woodland Park Zoo, Zoo Atlanta, Georgia Aquarium, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Vancouver Aquarium, Assiniboine Park Zoo, Oregon Zoo, Oregon Coast Aquarium, Virginia Living Museum and Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. The Zoo's Entrance was inspired by and filmed at the Baton Rouge Zoo.

Music

James Horner composed the score for Night at the Zoo, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. It was one of the final film scores of Horner before his tragic death in June 2015. Horner chose not to adapt Alan Silvestri's themes for the Night at the Museum trilogy, instead opting for making a completely new and original score.
