Scientists at SETI detect a mysterious signal from an extraterrestrial source, just before a massive alien spacecraft appears in Earth's orbit. Panic ensues as smaller alien ships descend on major cities, vaporizing everything in their path. Attempts to communicate fail, and Earth's defenses crumble under the aliens' superior technology, leading to global chaos and societal collapse.
As the aliens begin their ground invasion, focused on harvesting Earth's resources, a group of unlikely heroes emerges—military personnel, scientists, and FBI agents with knowledge of long-hidden alien encounters. They discover that the aliens have been watching Earth for centuries, planning this invasion.
In a desperate bid, the team identifies a weakness in the alien technology and launches a final mission to infiltrate the mothership. Using a captured alien vessel, they plant a nuclear device in the core of the mothership. When discovered, one team member sacrifices themselves, allowing the others to escape as the bomb detonates, destroying the ship.
With the mothership gone, alien forces on Earth deactivate, and humanity wins the day. In a somber post-credits scene, the alien home-world is shown, where defeated aliens discuss how their failed invasion has only made humanity stronger and a greater threat to their own survival.
