Futurama: The Movie is a 2007 American animated science fiction comedy film based on the Fox animated sitcom Futurama by Matt Groening. The film was directed by Rich Moore, Produced by David X. Cohen and Ken Keeler, and written by Jeff Westbrook and Kristin Gore from a story by Eric Horsted, and distributed by 20th Century Studios, and produced by The Curiosity Company. The film stars the original voice cast of Billy West, Katey Sagal, John DiMaggio, Lauren Tom, and Phil LaMarr reprising their roles with Will Arnett, Paul Rudd, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Jordan Peele, Keegan-Michael Key, and Awkwafina as new characters.

The film follows the Planet Express crew at the premiere of their very first feature length movie, wherein they face their biggest threat to date; an evil tyrant businessman who tries to put a forcefield on New New York. Initial plans for a feature film based on the series began on July 23, 2023. Rich Moore, who previously directed episodes of the series, and the director of Wreck-It Ralph, and it's sequel Ralph Breaks the Internet, and co-director of Zootopia, was set to direct the film. The show's original voice cast were also set to return. as with the series, the film was animated by Rough Draft Studios and Film Roman.

Futurama: The Movie was theatrically released on March 19, 2027. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, praising the animation, voice performances, action sequences, science fiction elements, and humor. it grossed $1.709 billion, surpassing Shrek 5 (2026) to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time, as well having the biggest opening weekend for an animated film ever, and becoming the highest-grossing film of 2027 and the eight-highest-grossing film of all time at the time of its release.

On July 23, 2023, on the official Fox Twitter account, it was announced that an animated theatrical feature-length film based on the series was in the works. In an interview, series creator Matt Groening said that the film was now openly discussed due to the past commercial success of The Simpsons Movie, which showed that “every single big TV series can be made in film, no matter which one”.

Rich Moore, who previously directed episodes of the series, and co-directed Zootopia, and directed the two Wreck-It-Ralph movies, was announced as director of the film. Groening served as co-producer of the film, alongside David X. Cohen and Ken Keeler. The series cast was announced to reprise their roles for this film while those who starred in the revival were also announced to return. Will Arnett voices the film's main antagonist, and Paul Rudd, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, and Awkwafina voice new characters.

Animation[]

Like the series and The Simpsons Movie, Rough Draft Studios and Film Roman provided the animation.

Music[]

Hans Zimmer was hired to compose the score for the film after previously composing the score for The Simpsons Movie, while Christopher Tyng, composer of the series, as music supervisor. Licensed songs for the film include "Futurama Theme Song (Movie Version)", "Ballroom Blitz" by Sweet, "Gonna Fly Now" by Bill Conti, "Gonna Make You Sweat" by C+C Music Factory, "Macarena" by Los Del Rio, "Something Beautiful" by Tom Walker, "Can You Kick It" by A Tribe Called Quest, and "Free Ride" by Edgar Winter Group, while an original song was used for the film's end credits entitled, "Future is Everything" performed by Kid Cudi and Lady Gaga.

A teaser trailer and official poster were released on October 12, 2026, followed by the theatrical trailer released on February 14, 2027.

Release[]

Futurama: The Movie had its world premiere at the 2027 Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme D’Or. It was theatrically released in the United States on March 19, 2027 in 2D, 3D, IMAX and Dolby Digital formats.

Home media[]

Futurama: The Movie was released on digital platforms on July 9, 2027, and on Blu-ray and DVD on July 12.

Futurama: The Movie has grossed $107.9 million in the United States and Canada, and $100,32 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $1923.2 million.

Critical response[]

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 81% of 148 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.3/10. The website's consensus reads, "Futurama: The Movie certainly shows off a humor-driven, action-packed film for the Matt Groening franchise that proves it's a match made in heaven." Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 75 out of 100, based on 21 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A-" on an A+ to F scale.
